Cleaning Your Cover and Shade

We’ve previously covered how to clean your Sunbrella cover, but in the event you need to clean your shade or wash a certain areas on your 9oz cover, we recommend following the steps below. We also recommend cleaning your cover while on the boat to make the process easier. For the best clean, follow the simple steps:

  1. Brush off loose dirt.
  2. Hose your cover down.
  3. Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid.
  4. Use a soft bristle marine brush to clean.
  5. Rinse the cover thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.

*If a stubborn stain persists, you can use a diluted bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning. For mildew, mix ¼ cup dishwashing liquid, 1 cup bleach, and 1 gallon water. For bird droppings, mix ¼ cup dishwashing liquid and 1 gallon water. If the inside of your cover needs cleaning, we suggest installing your cover inside-out on your boat. When doing this, your zipper should be on the opposite side. Once clean, we recommend turning your cover right side out.  Follow the same instructions as above.

For your shade, you’ll want to wash it either by hand with cold water, or machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Use a little detergent if needed, but no bleach and no fabric softener. Depending on use, you should only need to wash your shade every 6 months to maintain fabric performance. If you are starting to see a decrease in rain repellency, put the shade in the dryer on medium high heat for 10 minutes. The heat from the dryer will bring the water repellency treatment back to the surface of your shade.

Following these steps should remove your stain. For any further cleaning questions or concerns, you can reach out to our support team at support@laporteproducts.com and they will be happy to help!
